So, Anacortes Unknown Music Series is happening this weekend. This week also saw the release of Love Rock Revolution: K Records and the Rise of Independent Music by Mark Baumgarten. What do these things have in common (besides K, duh!)?
D+! That’s Bret Lunsford (Beat Happening), Phil Elverum (Microphones, Mt. Eerie) and Karl Blau. The band is featured on the excellent compilation accompanying Baumgarten’s new book, which you can get a copy of at Unknown! They will also be performing - as D+ and separately - a whole bunch! Check the Unknown line-up for dates and times!

You’ve probably heard about Mark Baumgarten’s new book Love Rock Revolution: K Records and the Rise of Independent Music. It’s a nifty summer read about all things K and it comes with a great music download, too!
This weekend, Baumgarten will be doing a series of readings all around the Pacific Northwest. The first date is this evening at Powell’s, and will be followed by a K tribute show at Valentine’s in Portland.
Tomorrow night, Baumgarten will be reading at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle for the opening of The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl. This art show/book reading extravaganza will be accompanied by performances by Slashed Tires and The Hive Dwellers! Tickets for that event are still on sale for just $10, so if you’re in Seattle you should definitely go dig the scene!
Finally, Baumgarten is reading at the Anacortes Unknown Music Series this weekend (the 14th & 15th) and will also be signing copies of the book, which you can pick up at the Small Press Book Fair if you don’t have one already!
Go forth and read, friends!

is there a complete discography of k's cassette releases somewhere? i'm so curious!

There is a complete discography of the official K releases in the appendix of Love Rock Revolution. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to fit in the cassettes, the International Pop Underground singles or the Dub Narcotic Disco Plates. But I might be putting those up online in the near future.

Amazing video from the pet parade that took place during the International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, set to music from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet IPU 7” “Music for Pets.”

What this particular oral history does is underscore the social processes in cultural production in the late twentieth century capitalist system…Overall, Baumgarten manages to pull off a rather balanced and historically important label biography through the format of an oral history - no easy feat.
